Prof. Manish Chhowalla

Goldsmiths’ Professor of Materials Science,
University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Prof. Manish Chhowalla is Goldsmiths’ Professor of Materials Science at the University of Cambridge. Prior to this, Prof. Chhowalla was the Donald H Jacobs Chair in Applied Physics in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Rutgers University (NJ, USA). He serves as also the Director of the Nanotechnology for Clean Energy Program at Rutgers. He holds a Visiting Professorship at Imperial. He has won the US National Science Foundation’s Early CAREER Awardas well as the Sigma Xi Outstanding Young Investigator for the Mid-Atlantic Region. His research interests are in large area electronics from solution processable materials. His research interests are in the fundamental studies of atomically thin two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). In particular, his group studies the optical and electronic properties of different phases of 2D TMDs. He has demonstrated that it is possible to induce phase transformations in atomically thin materials and utilize phases with disparate properties for field effect transistors, catalysis, and energy storage.Prior to his PhD, he worked for Multi-Arc Inc. (now Ion Bond) where he developed one of the first applications of “amorphous diamond” thin films. Fundamentally, he is interested in understanding phase transformations in materials and the role of disorder in determining material properties.
